Builders Tips
There's a lot of us out there merrily building our cockpits so I thought as I go along when I hit on a good idea, I would share it with you. Like most of us, I cannot afford to buy real cockpit seats as there is just too many other vital bits I need first. So, I bought a pair of Saab front seats (£40 the pair off ebay) and set about buiding some hefty bases to mount them on. Problem was - how do I move them to get in and out of the cockpit without having to drag them. Suddenly one day 'Ping' - an idea. so here you go ....
1. Buy yourself some lengths of double-slot shelving bracket from the local DIY (I bought grey)
2. Buy the required amount of fixed 50mm nylon castors from Screwfix (cheap as chips)
3. Mount the castors on your seat base making sure they are parallel
4. Flatten out (or drill out) the countersink screw holes in the inside of the shelving bracket so they are smooth
5. Lay upturned on the floor and drop your seat on
6. When they are sliding nicely, fit a large headed screw in each end. (these act as end stops)
7. Check again that once screwed down that the seat runs smoothly.
8. Mark the area where you want the seat to sit when you are in flying position
9. With a piece of metal bar, punch a pair of shallow recesses in the bracket from the top
10.Now you will find that the seat will still roll over the recesses you have made but won't budge in use

VOILA! and cheap!
